CBD Dosing for Pets: Choosing a Safe and Effective Amount

CBD Dosing for Pets: Choosing a Safe and Effective Amount

CBD can be incredibly helpful to pets suffering from disease, pain, and anxiety. But establishing the right, personalized dosage is crucial to a safe and positive experience.

Before you purchase a CBD product for any animal, here are a few parameters to consider (this includes a dosage guide to our pet products).

1. Consider Your Pet's Size, Weight, and Unique Needs

Lighter-weight pets generally require lower CBD dosages. But regardless of size, it’s always good to start with a low dose and gradually increase if necessary.

Other factors influencing dosage include what you’re trying to treat and any underlying conditions your pet may have.

Note that it may be necessary not only to amend a dosage, but also change the frequency of administration.

For example, a pet’s acute, anxious response to thunderstorms and fireworks might be appeased by a higher, as-needed dosage. But chronic anxiety might ideally be targeted wth a smaller, daily dose of CBD.

While most talk is centered around CBD for cats and dogs, other animals can potentially benefit from it, too. Just be sure to check with your veterinarian, first.

2. Consult Your Veterinarian, and Use Pet-Specific Products

Before commencing any CBD regimen for your pet, consult with a veterinarian who is knowledgeable about CBD use in animals. They can provide guidance specific to your pet's needs and health condition.

Ensure you're also using CBD products designed exclusively for pets. These are usually formulated with pet-friendly ingredients and appropriate concentrations of CBD.

Products intended for humans may contain ingredients that are harmful to animals.

3. Start with a Low Dose and Gradually Adjust

A common starting point for many pets is 0.2 to 0.5 milligrams of CBD per pound of body weight, once or twice a day.

A 20-pound dog, for instance, might start with 4 to 10 milligrams of CBD.

After administering each dose, closely monitor your pet's behavior, symptoms, and overall well-being. If you notice any adverse reactions or no improvement in their condition, consult your veterinarian.

If necessary, adjust the CBD dosage based on your pet's response. This is very much a trial and error process! Slowly increase or decrease the dosage as directed by your veterinarian.

4. Use High-Quality Products, and Avoid THC

CBD is becoming a prolific commodity, but be careful where you shop. Make sure you're using high-quality CBD products from reputable manufacturers that provide third-party lab testing results to verify the product's purity and potency.

Also, be cautious with products that contain THC (tetrahydrocannabinol)—THC can be toxic to pets. Look for products labeled THC-free or with very low THC content (less than 0.3%).

5. Consider the Form of CBD

CBD for pets is available in various forms, including oil tinctures, capsules, treats, and topical creams. The form you choose may affect how well your pet absorbs and responds to CBD.
